Lord of War is getting a sequel. Bill Skarsgård, who is attached to co-star in the sequel to the 2005 drama movie starring Nicolas Cage, recently provided an update on when the follow-up is expected to begin production.
In late 2024, Skarsgård sat down with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast to discuss his latest movie, Nosferatu, as well as a wide range of upcoming projects, including the Lord of War sequel Lords of War. When asked for an update on the sequel, which was announced back in May 2023, the actor shared the following: “[Nicolas Cage is] a legend. And it looks like it’s happening next year [2025]… It’s a great script and I think it’ll be a fun one. The character, he’s a charismatic… f**king a**hole. And you saw the first one… It’s so cynical and so satirical and bleak and like everyone’s terrible, and it’s also kind of a dark comedy… I like that. I like when you laugh at terrible people… So I think that’ll be a fun one, yeah.”

This Obscure Black Comedy Features Nic Cage’s Most Outlandish Performance
Nic Cage has taken on some of Hollywood’s strangest roles, but even by his standards, this 2017 is especially bizarre.
Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, Lord of War stars Cage as Yuri Orlov, an unscrupulous Ukrainian-American man who participates in the global arms trafficking industry in the years preceding and succeeding the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Although Cage’s performance was praised, overall critical reception was mixed, with many criticizing the movie’s lack of focus and handling of Yuri’s character. Lord of War also struggled at the box office, grossing just over $72 million worldwide, barely more than its $60 million budget.
Niccol returns to write and direct Lords of War, which will revolve around Cage’s Yuri discovering that he has a son, Anton (played by Skarsgård), who is trying to top his father’s wrongs rather than stop them as he launches a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. Filming was originally scheduled to begin in Fall 2023 but was likely delayed due to the actors’ strike.
Face/Off & National Treasure Sequels Also in the Works
Lords of War isn’t the only sequel that Cage might find himself starring in over the next decade. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard is attached to direct a Face/Off sequel at Paramount. Cage and Travolta are expected to return for the follow-up, despite the former’s character dying at the end of the 1997 film. While plot details remain under wraps, Cage revealed in January 2023 that the sequel will focus on his and Travolta’s characters’ children.

Disney is also trying to get a third National Treasure movie off the ground. Despite the action-adventure movies making big bucks during their theatrical runs, Disney has struggled to get National Treasure 3 out of development hell. In May 2024, franchise director Jon Turteltaub shared that the script is currently “being written.” He explained, “That doesn’t mean it will be finished and be great, but if it’s being written it will definitely be momentous when we read it. We all know what’s in it. But there’s a very, very good writer writing it right now who tends to write really good movies. If the script comes out close to good and you can see the finish line from where you are, we’re making the movie.”
Lord of War is currently streaming on Pluto TV.
