Bloody Elbow predictions suggest there’s a clear favorite in the UFC Macau main event

The UFC will return to China for a card that will air in the early hours of Saturday morning for US fight fans.

A bantamweight fight with title implications between the division’s former champion Petr Yan and ex-flyweight titleholder Deiveson Figueiredo will headline at the Galaxy Arena in Macau this weekend.

Yan Xiaonan and Carlos Ulberg, who hopes to send a message to Alex Pereira, will fight on the undercard at UFC Macau. The Road to UFC Season 3 finalists will also compete for contracts at the event, which marks Dana White’s fourth visit to the city in the past decade.

Fans and fighters have had their say on the main event. Now the staff at BloodyElbow.com have made their final predictions ahead of the eagerly anticipated clash.

Petr Yan vs Deiveson Figueiredo predictions

Jordan Ellis: “I’ve always believed that Petr Yan would be dominant at 125lbs, but the Russian continues to test himself against the very best at bantamweight. This fight with Deiveson Figueiredo is the perfect chance to prove my theory correct. I expect a competitive fight early, but Yan will ultimately take over down the stretch. A stoppage win wouldn’t surprise me. Ultimately, though, I expect this one to go the distance.”

Prediction: Petr Yan by decision

Donagh Corby: “Deiveson Figueiredo has had a perfect start to life at bantamweight, but it’s a very different type of test this weekend when he faces former champion Petr Yan. Yes, he’s defeated an ex-titlist before in Cody Garbrandt, and even a recent contender in Marlon Vera, but Yan is a different animal. Garbrandt is an infamously spent force, and Vera’s position atop the division has always been in question. But Yan is a legitimately top contender with some of the best boxing in the UFC pound-for-pound. Expect fireworks, and a Yan win that proves there are weight classes for a reason.”

Prediction: Petr Yan by KO

Jamie Theodosi: “It almost feels like Petr Yan is the forgotten man at 135lbs. After rebounding from a three-fight losing skid last time out, the Russian reminded everyone why he is still a title contender. Still in his prime at 31 years old, Yan has one of the most well-rounded skill sets not only in the bantamweight division but in the entire UFC. Granted, standing opposite him is a fellow all-rounder in Figueiredo, but I think Yan’s tight boxing will prove too much for Figgy.”

Prediction: Petr Yan by decision

Curtis Calhoun: “This matchup, on paper, puts two of the most dynamic strikers in the bantamweight division against each other. But the ground game will be a prominent factor in this fight. Yan and Figueiredo will trade heavy blows in the early rounds before Yan finds his wrestling timing and takes Figueiredo down with ease as the fight progresses. Yan will utilize body hooks in Rounds 4 and 5 to stifle Figueiredo and control the fight’s pacing late.

Prediction: Petr Yan by decision

James Sweetnam: “When Petr Yan claimed the bantamweight title, he looked like an unstoppable force, capable of reigning over the division for a long time to come. Alas, things didn’t exactly work out like that, with the Russian losing his title via disqualification to Aljamain Sterling, in a fight that looked in the bag. Sadly, the defeat put out Yan’s metaphorical fire, and he hasn’t looked the same since. Therefore, despite ‘No Mercy’ winning his last contest, I’m going to edge towards an in-form Deiveson Figueiredo, who’s looked sensational since moving up to 135 pounds.”

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo by decision
