Cynthia Erivo made her triumphant return tonight to the Golden Globe Awards, marking her first time at the ceremony since 2021. The actress is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role as Elphaba in Wicked. For the occasion, Erivo wore a black custom Louis Vuitton gown embellished with silver flowers.

In her ELLE Women in Hollywood cover story, Erivo reflected on what it meant to her to step into the iconic role. “There’s a complete connection between me and her—we’re not just erasing who’s playing this character.”
In fact, playing Elphaba was an intensely physical and emotional experience for Erivo, who trained vigorously for the role. “I was up at six o’clock in the morning on my treadmill training. I would run and sing on the treadmill. I was always making sure that my body was ready,” she said.
This year’s Globes marks another milestone in Erivo’s multifaceted career, which includes three previous Golden Globe nominations for her performances in Harriet and Genius: Aretha. Reflecting on her latest nomination, Erivo told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m so glad that this time around I got to do it with a musical. I got to sing and do all the things that I love to do in one place. This has honestly been the ride of a lifetime.”
During her Wicked press tour and last year’s award show season, Erivo was a scene-stealer on the red carpet. Her looks included a custom Thom Browne gown embellished with over 240,000 crystals for the Wicked premiere in Mexico City and a cut-out Louis Vuitton gown in Elphaba’s signature green at the L.A. premiere. Reflecting on the Louis Vuitton look, Erivo told Vogue, “The L.A. carpet [look] for me is a such a wow factor—the color, the fabric. It just feels electric—[it lets] my character truly own the color green in such big, bold way!”
