Former Boston Celtics center linked to Los Angeles Lakers in trade rumors

As the dust settles on perhaps the most shocking trade in NBA history, the Lakers still need to make subsequent moves to round out their roster. Yes, they landed superstar Luka Doncic from the Mavericks in a stunning move, but they still desperately need a center.

Even before dealing for Doncic, the Lakers were shopping for centers. Now, after trading Anthony Davis in the deal to Dallas, they need size down low. Per The Ringer’s Kirk Goldsberry on The Bill Simmons Podcast, it sounds like two names are realistic scenarios for Los Angeles.

“(Nic) Claxton and (Robert Williams III) are the names that keep coming up, and I would guess that one of them would be on the Lakers,” Goldsberry said. “I would guess that. They need a five. They don’t have it.”

Williams, the former Celtics big man, has already found himself in trade rumors this deadline. The Blazers already have multiple centers on their roster in Deandre Ayton and first-round pick Donovan Clingan. When Williams is able to play, his impact is still noteworthy. But the injury concerns are always a problem with Williams and his availability.

Ahead of Thursday’s 3 p.m. deadline, the Lakers need to be aggressive now to land a center. Jaxson Hayes has shown flashes, but there’s not enough consistency for a team that now features Doncic and LeBron James. Claxton is another name in the mix as the Nets could look to offload more talent in their rebuild.

There are currently a lot of moving parts in Los Angeles in the wake of the Doncic trade. The Lakers realistically aren’t as well-equipped to make a run at the title in the short-term considering their center issues. But they swung the trade to land the five-time first-team All-NBA performer in Doncic to secure their superstar of the future.
