The coach talks about the return to action
A game against Girona awaits RCD Espanyol at Montilivi on Saturday, and whilst the contest ends an absence from competition of some three weeks, and is a Catalan derby, coach Manolo González says it is “just another match.”
“We have to go out mentally prepared to do our best and take advantage of the weak points of the opposition. We need to keep a cool head, know how to play the game, be organised and stay aggressive when we don’t have the ball,” he told the media on Friday.
“We want to win, and the rivalry with Girona is just like the one we have with other teams. I am only thinking about wanting to win tomorrow.”
González highlighted that a clear virtue of Girona is that “they are is a recognisable side. They don’t vary too much depending on the players they have. That is why we have focused on an idea about how they play, not on the particularities of the individual players.”
“The home side are always the favourites. If we played at the RCDE Stadium I would say that the favourites would be Espanyol. So far we have produced good things in many areas. I think we are capable of competing against Girona and achieving something positive.”
His main aspiration is for the team to return to being as solid as they were at the end of last season.
“That was due to the work of all the players, from the forwards to the goalkeeper. We want the team to take on that version of a competitive side.”
