KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV)- We have had a First Warn on Wednesday for several days, highlighting the risk for freezing rain and icy roads. That chance is increasing, with the National Weather Service extending a Winter Weather Advisory southward to include the Kansas City metro through noon.
The morning brings very light and patchy areas of drizzle, so a widespread icy mess is not likely. But, slick spots are a good bet… so extra precaution is wise. The most widespread freezing drizzle may occur closer to lunch with temperatures still at or just below the freezing mark. We likely warm enough by 2 pm to transition to rain, and we should be dry shortly after sunset.
The main concern will be bridges, sidewalks, and untreated roads. A total of a glaze to 0.10″ is possible. Areas south of Kansas City that are not included in the Winter Weather Advisory may still see brief and very isolated areas of freezing drizzle, but these areas are more likely to see rain.
Thursday is a nice break with sunshine and warmer mid-40s, then Friday cools back some. We are also First Warning you for Saturday, with another round of potential light rain and freezing rain in the morning (though this one looks more of a glancing blow at this time). Super Bowl Sunday will be dry with chilly 30s for highs.
Winter continues to have a grip on us next week, with a snow chance for Tuesday. At this point, a few inches are possible if the track stays as it is currently.
