Jury count remains at 16 in Karen Read murder trial

Jury selection in the Karen Read murder casecontinued for a ninth day Monday as the court seeks to seat at least two more jurors to bring the total to 18.

One juror from last week was lost, while one was gained, leaving the count at 16.

So far, eight men and eight women have been chosen.

Fifty-five potential jurors were in the courtroom. Nine said they knew a witness in the case.

Judge Beverly Cannone read a list of 150 people who could be potentially called to the stand in the six- to eight-week trial.

The original goal was to seat 16 jurors, but the court indicated last week that it wanted to seat at least two more. Twelve will decide the case, with the rest serving as alternates.

The Bristol County woman is accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in January 2022 by backing over him with her SUV and leaving him to die the snow.

Her defense team has alleged that someone else killed O’Keefe and that Read was framed.

Three new jurors were seated Thursday, but two previously selected were dismissed.

Court was not in session Friday.

A federal judge just ruled against “Free Karen Read” supporters who wanted to protest closer to the courthouse.

A buffer zone will remain in place.

This is Read’s second murder trial, as her first ended in a mistrial.
