The calm before the storm.
Statlander vs. Shida
Kris Statlander is just days away from her TBS Championship match against Mercedes Mone at AEW Full Gear this Saturday. But, before that, Statlander took on Hikaru Shida on AEW Dynamite.
As the match began, the commentary questioned if Statlander was smart to take this match ahead of her title opportunity, and though Kris is a great competitor, Shida was just a step ahead in the early goings. Shida had Statlander thrown to the outside and laid out on the floor after continuing the attack. Shida then tried to get the win with a pin as the returned inside the ring, but it wasn’t enough.
Kris Statlander started to battle back and the two were trading blows during the commercial break. As the show returned, Statlander was in control, but couldn’t put Shida away just yet. These two have fought before, with Kris winning the first encounter, so Shida wasn’t willing to lose again.
Shida almost had it won with a cradle pin, but it wasn’t enough. Shida took too long on her Kitana finisher and couldn’t hit it, but she did nail the Falcons Arrow for a two count. Shida went for the Kitana again, but Statlander reversed it into her finisher for the win.
Following the match, Statlander and Shida shook hands before Mercedes Mone interrupted. Mercedes flaunted her title and said she’s now been a champion longer than Statlander has, and that’ll continue after Full Gear. Mercedes tried to send Kamille into the ring after Statlander, but, Kamille, who’s already in an arm-sling, ran into Statlander and Shida, which caused her to get tossed out of the ring by both.
Mercedes tried to attack Statlander from behind but failed, allowing Statlander to hit the Wednesday Night Fever, laying out the champ.
