Lamar University’s basketball teams aim for SLC Championship titles, with both earning No. 2 seeds in their tournaments.
BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University is vying to make its mark on college hoops, with both their men and women basketball team’s looking to take home the SLC Championship.
On Tuesday, The boys team defeated the Nicholls Colonels in the semifinals with a 58-55 win.
The Lamar Men’s Basketball team grinded their way into the conference championships with a 19-12 overall record on the year and going 14-6 in SLC play, claiming them the 2 seed in the tournament.
The Lady Cardinals soared above the competition most of the year, going 22-7 overall and 17-3 in conference play after rattling off a 7-game win streak to end the season.
Due to the Cardinals No. 2 overall seed, the Lamar received a two-round bye into the tournament semifinals, and will be facing off against the 3 seed, Nicholls Colonels Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
The Cardinals were hoping for another offensive explosion from Junior Guard Alexis Marmolejos. Marmolejos led the Cardinals in scoring this season averaging 14 points per game, and was named to the 2025 All-Southland Conference team.
The Cardinals are making their 22nd appearance in the SLC Championships and enters the 2025 version of the tournament looking to win its fifth title and make its seventh appearance in the NCAA Championships.
The Lady Cardinals also secured the 2 seed and won’t be tipping off until Wednesday at 1 p.m.
They will be taking on a tough SFA Lumberjacks squad who are coming into the tournament on fire, after winning their last 13 consecutive games.
The Lady Cards’ will look to lean on their two All SLC First Team players, Akasha Davis and Sabria Dean throughout the game.
Davis provides a bruising interior presence around the rim averaging 13.1 points per game and 9 rebounds while also shattering the school’s all-time rebounding record. Dean led the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game and also became the second Cardinal to reach 1,500 career points, 300 assists and 200 steals.
The tandem will look to attack early and often as they hope to will their way past SFA and into SLC champions. They will be trying to make their first NCAA championship birth since 2010.
