More Michigan snow on the way, even for southern Michigan

A storm system is going to bring its cold backside of the system through Michigan tonight and Tuesday. The precipitation will be snow at times even as far south as Ann Arbor and Detroit.

For most of us in Lower Michigan this isn’t going to be a big snowstorm. However, we have lowered our standards on what a big snow is given the fact it’s mid-April.

Here’s the radar forecast from midnight tonight to Tuesday evening.

The snow is usually mixed with rain at this time of year. This mix will be the case tomorrow, but at times it will be mostly snow. The snow will develop over the Upper Peninsula today. There is a winter storm warning for part of the Upper Peninsula.

The snow will develop over northern Lower Michigan after midnight and then move into southern Lower Michigan toward sunrise tomorrow.

There is no reason why the snow won’t be a robust spurt of wet snow. The roads are likely warm enough that snow won’t stick for a long time. If the burst of snow is vigorous you could encounter road slush for an hour.

In general though I don’t think it’s something you’ll need to change your plans on, unless it’s planting some landscape items. It will be just disgustingly uncomfortable for mid-April.

Here’s the total snowfall forecast

Total snowfall forecast by 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15.NOAA

Southwest Lower Michigan will see the least amount of snowflakes. The Thumb, high spots in Oakland County, and Genesee County could have up to one inch of snow on the grass. Northwest Lower Michigan around Cadillact, Traverse City, Kalkaska and Gaylord could have up to two inches of snow. The rest of northern Lower Michigan may have an inch of snow.

It will be cold for mid-April. Our normal high temperature now is in the high-50s south and mid-50s north. When we experience temperatures Tuesday only in the 30s and 40s you can consider it cold. You can complain about the cold. It’s time for you to complain about winter weather in mid-spring.

The wind will be strong for these temperatures. Northwest winds will gust to over 30 mph through the day.

With temperatures in the 30s and winds up to 30 mph, the wind chill will be in the 20s.

One more day of snow tomorrow. Yes I think that will be the last snowflakes for about seven months.
