Boston has surpassed 60 degrees again, with this afternoon’s high temperature reaching 63 degrees – 1 degree higher than yesterday’s springlike day. Although relatively high for this time of year, the low 60s don’t surpass the record high for the day, which is 74 degrees set in 2021.
But this short warming trend won’t last long. Later tonight and into Wednesday we’ll see a cold front knocking temperatures back down to more seasonable averages — in the mid-40s.
The average date for the first 60-degree or higher day is actually Feb. 19, so we’re about three weeks late this year. Still, daily highs are almost 3 degrees higher than normal at this point in the month, with the nights slightly cooler.
The cold front is set to arrive later this evening as clouds move in, sparking a few scattered rain showers later tonight, well after the commute home. With pressure sitting off the coast, whatever showers organize won’t last long and may dry out before reaching Greater Boston.
Wednesday will continue the cooler temperatures as a shot of cold, Canadian air overtakes the region as more widespread high pressure spreads overhead. This will drop temperatures back to seasonal highs in the mid-40s.
Greater Boston: Feeling warm under mostly sunny skies. Highs build to the upper 50s with a breeze around 10 mph. A spot shower might pass through later this evening.
Central/Western Mass.: A nice day with mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 50s. A few spots from Worcester to Springfield. A shower or two may pass through this evening.
Cape and Islands: An onshore flow keeps it feeling slightly cooler today with highs in the upper 40s and low 50s. Mostly sunny skies with a breeze to about 15 mph.
Rhode Island: A nice day with temperatures reaching the low to mid-50s under mostly sunny skies.
New Hampshire: Highs push to the mid-50s with partly sunny skies. Increasing clouds late with a couple of showers this evening.
Rest of Northern New England: Feeling warm and seeing more sun than clouds. Extreme Northern New England sees more clouds in the afternoon with a few scattered showers passing through later in the day.
