Legendary former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is reportedly being linked to multiple teams ahead of the next NFL head coaching cycle.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic spoke to 10 anonymous NFL head coaches and executives, asking them to name the best possible landing spot for Belichick, and the teams most often mentioned were the Jacksonville Jaguars, Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Russini previously noted that Belichick has a strong relationship with Jaguars owner Shahid Khan, but is is expected that Belichick would want to make changes to the front office in Jacksonville, which would impact general manager Trent Baalke.
After going 36-44 with one playoff appearance in five seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995, Belichick got his second head coaching opportunity in 2000 when he joined the Patriots.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions Patriots owner Robert Kraft ever made, as Belichick enjoyed an unprecedented run of success over the next 24 seasons.
Belichick posted a 266-121 regular-season, led the Patriots to the playoffs 18 times, won 17 AFC East titles and reached the Super Bowl nine times, winning six of them.
Despite all of his success, Belichick and the Patriots parted ways after going 4-13 last season, and he was replaced by Jerod Mayo.
After future first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady left the Patriots to sign with the Bucs in free agency following the 2019 season, Belichick made the playoffs just once over the next four seasons, while failing to win a playoff game or an AFC East title.
It was initially expected that a head coach of Belichick’s caliber would have no issue landing elsewhere, but he did not secure a head coaching job this past offseason, leaving his future in doubt.
However, Russini noted that the 72-year-old is “motivated” to get back in the NFL next season, so he should once again be a candidate during the next hiring cycle.
With quarterback Trevor Lawrence leading the way, the Jags looked like a team on the rise, winning the AFC South and a playoff game in 2022.
They missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record last season, though, and are off to a 2-9 start this season, which suggests Doug Pederson is not long for the team’s head coaching position.
Jacksonville has plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but it needs someone who can put it all together, and Belichick may be that guy if Khan is willing to give him control over the personnel as well.
On the heels of three consecutive playoff appearances, the Cowboys have been one of the league’s most disappointing teams this season with a 3-7 mark.
It seems like a near certainty that Mike McCarthy will not return as head coach next season, and while Belichick would likely love to coach up top-end talent such as quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and pass-rusher Micah Parsons, it is fair to wonder how the dynamic between Belichick and owner Jerry Jones would work.
Jones is the general manager in addition to being the owner, and it is difficult to envision Belichick taking the Dallas job without assurances that he would have a primary say on personnel decisions.
Tampa Bay may present the best opportunity for Belichick to be head coach and GM like he was in New England, but the Bucs may be less likely to make a coaching change than the Jaguars and Cowboys.
Todd Bowles is in the midst of his third season as the Bucs’ head coach, and he won the NFC South and reached the playoffs in each of his first two campaigns.
Tampa is a disappointing 4-6 so far this season, although injuries are a big reason why with wide receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans missing significant time.
Despite their record, the Buccaneers are just 1.5 games behind the Atlanta Falcons for the NFC South lead, and if they can turn things around and make the playoffs, Tampa may not be an option for Belichick.
