Free-agent running back Nick Chubb sent a clear and concise message Monday as he awaits his next NFL contract.

The four-time Pro Bowler shared a couple clips from a recent workout, which included him squatting more than 500 pounds.

“They’ve already wrote my ending when I’m just getting started,” he wrote in the caption.

Chubb is a prime example of how quickly the pendulum can shift for a running back in the NFL.

The 29-year-old earned his fourth straight Pro Bowl nod in 2022 after running for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was midway through a three-year, $36 million extension with the Cleveland Browns.

Then Chubb tore his MCL and damaged his ACL two games into the 2023 campaign, the second major knee injury he suffered dating back to college.

The Browns running back proceeded to miss the first six games of 2024 as part of his recovery and was then sidelined for the final three weeks thanks to a broken foot.

Chubb’s production when he did play was far below his usual level. His 3.3 yards per carry were well below his career average (5.1).

That he has remained unsigned this long speaks to the general uncertainty around his value moving forward. The market for running backs has been pretty brutal, too. Aaron Jones is the only free agent at the position who has signed a deal averaging eight figures annually.

Chubb is clearly carrying a chip on his shoulder and he’ll probably need to hold onto that through the regular season. It’s tough to see him getting a long-term deal at this stage of the offseason, so his hope of securing another big payout probably rests squarely on having a bounce-back year in 2025.
