Proposed Phillies-Blue Jays blockbuster ships embattled $8M All-Star to Toronto

The Philadelphia Phillies largely refused to tinker with their roster heading into the 2024 season. That’s not going to be the case in 2025.

After two near misses in the playoffs, the Phillies were convinced they had the formula for a World Series victory. But their rocky second half of the season and swift postseason defeat against the rival New York Mets told a much different story.

What was once the most carefree team in Major League Baseball seemed tense and unsure of themselves by the postseason. The lineup also went silent at the worst possible time, and that could have ramifications for one first-time All-Star.

Third baseman Alec Bohm has been the subject of rampant trade speculation, and he’s even had his work ethic called into question by unnamed Phillies sources. It seems like a change of scenery is in order, and one trade proposal would send him to an entirely new environment.

Brandon Wile of The Score recently predicted that Bohm would be traded to the Toronto Blue Jays this winter, filling an obvious need for the last-place Blue Jays in their own quest to make it back to the playoffs.

“It feels like the relationship between Alec Bohm and the Phillies has reached a point where both parties would benefit from a change. The Blue Jays represent that fresh start when they acquire him from Philadelphia after failing to get involved in the bidding war for Bregman,” Wile said.

“Bohm, who has two years of team control left, fits Toronto’s competitive window and gives them another right-handed power bat. His .779 OPS last season would have ranked second on the club, while his 44 doubles would’ve tied him for the team lead.”

The 28-year-old Bohm looked to be headed for the breakout Phillies fans always dreamed he could have in 2024, but his All-Star first half gave way to a disappointing finish. He slashed just .251/.299/.382 in 49 games after the Midsummer Classic and ended up on the bench in one of the Phillies’ four postseason games.

Maybe the writing isn’t fully on the wall, but the amount of trade speculation circling Bohm at this point certainly feels like an omen. A fresh start could benefit Bohm, the Phillies, and the Blue Jays all at once if everything plays out in an ideal fashion.
