Also, those who don’t have a NJ driver’s license can get a REAL ID through a non-driver ID appointment or an out-of-state transfer appointment. Residents can also monitor the MVC mobile units to make an appointment there, if available.
Those looking to make an appointment can only do so 90 days in advance. Every morning, a new day 90 days from now is available for scheduling.
To cope with the increase demand for REAL ID, the MVC adds close to 3,000 new appointments each day, NJMVC press secretary William Connolly said.
“We will continue to monitor appointment availability and optimize the mix of appointments, in accordance with demand. And we strongly encourage those individuals who are due for renewal (within three months of expiration) to consider upgrading to a REAL ID at a license renewal appointment now,” he said.
Keep in mind that, following a change in security protocols, New Jersey MVC offices no longer print IDs in office on the day of the transaction. So, even if everything goes well with your REAL ID application appointment, you’ll have to wait up to two weeks for it to arrive in your mailbox.
If you are planning to travel soon, you can also consider applying for a U.S. passport. Typically, it takes up to 6 weeks to get a new one, or up to three weeks if expedited.
