It doesn’t take a baseball expert to determine why Alex Bregman has stayed on the MLB open market for months. The star third baseman obviously hasn’t come across an offer appealing enough to sign on the dotted line.
But on Tuesday, WEEI’s Rob Bradford provided a more detailed explanation of why the two-time World Series champion still is without a team as the start of spring training draws closer.
“Sources suggest that interested teams (including Red Sox) are coming in with the high AAV/fewer years approach with Bregman,” Bradford posted to X. “Toronto might be outlier with more years.”
It’s tough to knock teams for reportedly not being bullish about making a very long-term offer for Bregman, even though he’s a very high-impact player. The two-time All-Star turns 31 in late March and is an everyday position player, so there are reasons to believe a contract of five years or longer would not age very well.
Thus, Bregman and his group of suitors are effectively in a staring contest to see who blinks first. And if Scott Boras’ track record with high-profile clients tells us anything, Bregman won’t succumb to the pressures that come with going the extra mile in free agency.
