Syndication: Arizona Republic

TEMPE – Arizona State baseball is coming off a series sweep of Gonzaga, where its starting pitching shined. In the three-game series, ASU starters allowed zero runs, and the entire pitching staff allowed only six for the weekend. The Sun Devils starters have been stellar all seasons, led by senior right-hander Jack Martinez and junior left-hander Ben Jacobs. In their last start, the duo combined for 13 innings for zero runs, two hits, and 16 strikeouts, earning both Big 12 honors.

The Big 12 announced that the two Sun Devils won weekly awards, Jacobs named pitcher of the week, and Martinez named newcomer of the week.

Arizona State pitcher Ben Jacobs (22) glances over toward the runner on first during ASU’s home opener against Ohio State at Phoenix Municipal Stadium Feb. 14, 2025, in Phoenix, Ariz.

In his Friday start against Gonzaga, Jacobs was perfect, retiring the first 17 Bulldogs batters. The left-hander had struggled to limit home runs in his first three starts of the season. However, the Golden Spikes watch list member came out with his best performance of the year, going 6.0 innings for one hit and six k’s.

The following day, Martinez one-upped his teammate with an even better performance on the mound. In 7.0 innings, Martinez allowed one hit and struck out 10 Bulldog batters. The Sun Devils right-hander came from Louisiana-Lafayette this past summer and has made an instant impact with the program.

ASU’s bullpen has struggled this season to maintain leads late in ballgames. This past weekend, the Sun Devils starters ensured that head coach Willie Bloomquist didn’t have to worry about it with some stellar stints on the bump. Jacobs and Martinez’s performances earned them individual honors with the Big 12 and will continue to ride that momentum against Arizona on Tuesday.
