Wheel of Fortune is a classic gameshow with plenty of room for hysterical answers as contestants frantically try to guess a catchphrase with half the letters missing.
In an interview with People, Vanna White, a longstanding co-host and staple of the show, shared some of the funniest answers she has heard during her career.
Even as recent as December 30th, one contestant blundered an answer for a “Famous City Food.” The answer was ‘New York Cheesecake,’ but the bewildered competitor went with everyone’s favorite New York Cheesesteak.’
For the uninitiated, Wheel of Fortune is a popular gameshow that first aired in the US back in the 70’s. The formula has remained the same over the years. Contestants spin a giant wheel in the center of the stage for a chance to win cash prizes. Those competitors must also try to decipher catchphrases or sayings with only a clue and a few letters to work with.
The Wheel of Fortune Has A History With Bizarre Answers
White reveals a few more favorites from her 42 years with the show. In the interview with People, White recalls a contestant who went with ‘Styrofoam Hat’ instead of ‘Styrofoam Cup.’ She also recalls a much more risque answer; the solution was ‘Gone with the wind,’ but the contestant went with the tried and true ‘Done with one hand.’
White also reveals her favorite blooper of all time. The contestant had an easy puzzle to solve, as they were only missing a single letter in the puzzle. The clue was ‘Streetcar Na _ ed Desire.’ The correct answer is ‘Streetcar Named Desire,’ but the unfortunate contestant chose ‘Streetcar Naked Desire’ instead.
We even reported on a recent gaff in November, as it was so hilarious. The answer was, ‘Give yourself a round of applause.’ The contestant only had the letter ‘E’ in the first word, which made it quite difficult, but he went with ‘Treat yourself a round of sausage!’
In all fairness to the contestants, answering trivia with an audience must be absolutely nerve-wracking. White even stated as such, saying, “I feel for our contestants because they are so nervous. But, I do chuckle on the inside at some of the wrong answers.”
I’m also quite confident nobody has screwed up their appearance on Wheel of Fortune as badly as Randy Marsh in South Park.
