Williamson County authorities have declined to press charges against Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
Worthy, a former Texas football player who has an address in the Austin suburb of Georgetown, was arrested Friday. He was booked for assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation, which is a third-degree felony.
Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick on Saturday evening told the Statesman that, after speaking with multiple witnesses, his office is not accepting the case at this time.
“After further investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and further discussion with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy and his attorneys, this case is being declined at this time pending completion of the investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office,” reads an email from Dick’s office. “Mr. Worthy and his lawyers are fully cooperating with this investigation.
“We will continue to evaluate the case. As is our practice with all declines, should you develop additional information indicative of probable cause in this case, our office will consider that information and may present the case at that time to a Williamson County Grand Jury.”
Worthy was released from Williamson County jail sometime after 5:50 p.m. Saturday, jail records show.
Sam Bassett, one of Worthy’s attorneys told the Statesman on Saturday evening: “We will continue to cooperate.”
When news of Worthy’s arrest broke, Bassett and attorney Chip Lewis maintained their client’s innocence.
“We are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy’s arrest,” the statement to the Statesman read. “We are working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation.
“The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy’s residence upon discovery of her infidelity. She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy…”
The former University of Texas football wideout had just finished his rookie season after being drafted by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Worthy — who authorities say lives in Georgetown, about 30 miles north of Austin — was the first Texas receiver selected in the first round since the Detroit Lions took Roy Williams No. 7 overall in 2004.
